So, another away day comes round, and the plans on how to get there get underway. We (Mark and I) have two options, go on the minibus with the rest of the ‘crew’ or play in the fans match, which meant one of us driving.
Glenn was working and so was booked on the minibus.
We decided to risk the fans match and I eventually persuaded Mark to drive. Bearing in mind he had never ever driven a lengthy distance on the motorway before this was a risky call.
So, Saturday arrives, I check over Marks car and we go to Gigg to meet up with the rest of the team. We acquire another passenger and the car leaves Gigg with Mark, myself, Siobhan and Josh happy as Larry.
Surprisingly, Mark was fairly good at this motorway lark and we got to Scunthorpe without any major hitches (apart from his obsession with wiping the windscreen and wandering lanes). We arrive at the Tesco meeting point and meet up in the café. We then get in convoy (not good memories of convoys for me, I start getting nervous), and Dave leads us to the school we are playing at.
We get changed and get told the team. Me and Mark are on the bench.
The game kicks off, and FBFC go 2-0 up, Mike gets injured and I’m called on as right mid.
HT. Iron Filings 0-2 FBFC.
The second half kicks off after a minor dispute over team selection between Jimmy and John, with Jimmy getting his way.
Mark soon gets on at right back, put FBFC still cruise into a 4-0 lead. Mark and I are steady if unspectacular but still get subbed way before the end. We are both annoyed at getting subbed but surely every manager wants that????
FT. Iron Filings 0-4 FBFC.
After a few discussions in the changing rooms again over team selections we go back in convoy to the pub near Glanford Park.
At 14:10 we wander across to the stadium and get a seat.
We watch the depleted Shakers put up a spirited show but recent departures are missed and we lose 3-2.
We pile back into the car and creep out onto the motorway and home. Mark eventually gets better at motorway driving in the dark and stop panicking about his mirrors. We arrive back at Gigg, wait for Glenn, and get a takeaway for tea.
Great performance, bad result.
Roll on Northampton!
Stu.
