Glenn’s day in Somerset

Glenn’s day started off badly when his bus didn’t turn up but he was saved by Mark, who gave him a lift. After getting his lift, he got the Metrolink to Manchester Piccadilly. The 0754 to Reading was the train he was getting to Birmingham. It was 8 mins late, and with only 12 mins between trains he was worried about missing his connection to Bristol. He made it into Birmingham and ran to the nearest screen to find the platform and ran to catch the 0942 Virgin service on route to Paignton. He was slightly annoyed at the price to Bristol being a lot more than he thought but other than that everything was ok. There were no problems and he arrived in Bristol at 1105. He had 30 mins until his next train so he had his dinner on the platform. He saw a group of Bristol City supporters on their way to Torquay while he was sat there. He boarded the 1140 Wessex service to Weymouth and relaxed soaking up the sun. The train took him on a tour of West Wiltshire and Somerset before arriving at Yeovil Pen Mill Station at 1322. The train station was on the outskirts of the town and was in the middle of nowhere! He took pot luck on a cycle path and luckily it lead him into the town centre. He walked up to the bus station where there was a taxi rank and got a taxi to Huish Park. He was glad the driver knew where he was going because the journey was about 15 mins long and the ground was about 5/6 miles out of town! He arrived at the ground at around 1400 and decided to go straight in. He put the flag up and waited for Stu and the other fans team players to arrive. They arrived shortly after him and we laughed along to the terrible, but fun pre match music. The Wurzels truly are an acquired taste! The match kicked off in beautiful sunshine and a loud home crowd got behind their team. Bury were under pressure from kick off and but for some good keeping and good defending could have conceded in the first 5 mins. We weathered the storm and started to get into the game. After some good pressure down the right, a cross came in, the ball broke for Whaley, who scored in the far corner. We withstood more Yeovil pressure and nearly grabbed a second goal when Newby’s cross was deflected onto his own bar by a Yeovil defender. The rest of the game was the odd counter attack from Bury and loads of possession from Yeovil, who relentlessly hoofed high balls into the box, only for Bury to deal with everything. The final whistle eventually came after 5 mins of stoppage time and Bury had won at the league leaders. Glenn caught a lift back to Bury with the fans team. The minibus was roasting hot with 15 lads crammed inside. We enjoyed the banter with the annoyed home supporters and headed home. We arrived back in Bury around 2225.

The day started for Stu at 3:30am (!!!) as he was going down to Yeovil in the fans’ team minibus. He was collected at Walshaw Cross at 3:50am and went on to collect the rest of the team, before getting on the M60 with a very packed minibus! The journey was sleepy and uneventful, with 3 stops, and 2 breakfasts on the way. We eventually arrived at Ilchester playing fields at 10am and got changed. Stu was sub for the first half but was linesman, giving a few dodgy decisions. HT, 3-2 to FBFC. Stu comes on replacing Paul and slots in at right wing. He’s steady if unspectacular and sets up both FBFC’s goals for an unconvincing 5-3 victory. We get changed and pile back in the minibus for a well-earned pint!

We eventually find our way out the pub and over to Huish Park for the shakers expected tanking at Yeovil.

The flag is already up and we get under way.

By some freak of nature, we actually win an away game, defending like Trojans and coming away from the league leaders with a 1-0 victory. (www.buryfc.co.uk)

Once again we pile onto the bus, merrily singing and dancing and generally annoying the Yeovil fans streaming away from the ground. We steam up the motorway, and plus a tea stop in Wolverhampton, Stu and Glenn are dropped off at Walshaw Cross at 10:30pm.

A truly fantastic day, 19 hours out of home, Stu: £25 Glenn £80.

What being an away fan is ALL about!
