With the penultimate away game of 2004, Mark and Stu decided they would make the trip down to the world famous Cambridge, not for the university but to watch their beloved Shakers! With Cambridge not having a fans team, we were very grateful for the lie in as it was freezing outside! At 08:30 we left Walshaw to meet up with Paul, Stan, Fred, Amanda and Chucky and newcomer Nick!  We arrived at Gigg at 08:50 after nipping to the bank, and were a bit worried when we couldn’t find Paul and the mini-bus! After deciding to look for them we found them around the corner! As there was no Glyn for this game Mark and Siobhan took no time in jumping in the front seat so they could to take in the scenery of the Christmas shoppers heading down the M60, towards the Trafford Centre!

Traffic was kind to us most of the way so Stan decided we would pull into a service station for a toilet break and dinner and a much welcome stretch of legs! While we were there a Scunthorpe supporter came over and had a chat! He told us that he lived in Middleton and started supporting The Iron when he saw them at Bolton and they sang all game! Bit annoying really when Gigg is only down the road – the one that got away! At 11:45 we hit the road once more and hit traffic down the A14 and arrived at the ground at 13:35! We put up the flag and took our seats!

The game kicks off and it’s a boring half and we are glad to see half time so we can get a hot drink to warm us up! The lads come back out and we play better and go in the lead through Nugent! Ten minutes later Swaz gets sent off for a second yellow (1st giving abuse to the ref, 2nd kicking the ball away) and Cambridge makes use of the extra man! The game ends 1-1! We leave the ground annoyed at not winning but happy with the point as we only had ten men for most of the second half!

We leave Cambridge at 16:55 and made our way home and everyone, in true style went to sleep except Stan and Siobhan who ate all the toffees! We arrive back at Gigg at 20:45, climbed back into Stu’s car and came home! Hopefully Santa will bring us what we want this Christmas –3 points against Shrewsbury! And on that note Merry Christmas and all the best for 2005 from The Walshaw Whites!

WW Mark.
