Peterborough United 4-1 Bury

London Road

02/01/06

Our New Year trip to Peterborough was our first game in a week, what with our other Christmas games being postponed. Stu set off with the fans team and I travelled on the train. I got a bus into Bury and the Metrolink to Manchester Piccadilly. I found the platform number and bought my ticket. I wasn’t expecting it to be £41 but nevermind! I boarded the Central Trains service to Norwich. The journey went smoothly, through Stockport, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Alfreton, Nottingham, Grantham and finally to Peterborough. The train entered the station at 13.40, giving me ample time to find the ground. The floodlights were visible from the railway bridge but the ground was not as easy to find the closer I got. The ground seemed to be further away than it looked! In the end I found it quite easily and met up with Stu and the other fans team lads in the KFC across the road. We stopped in there for about half hour and then crossed the road to the away end. We put the flag up and waited for the teams to come out. The Bury fans on the terrace made a bit of noise as the teams came out hoping for the 3 points. Our optimism lasted about 6 minutes as that’s how long it took Quinn to score for them. We were being outplayed but were still in it at 1-0. However we went 2-0 down just before half time, as a left wing cross was headed past his own keeper by Colin Woodthorpe. We went in 2-0 down at the break. We came out in the second half worried at our poor first half display but hopeful of a comeback. Our hopes were dashed again as we didn’t mark up from a corner and it was 3-0. What were we doing? We hadn’t played this badly for months. It was soon 4-0 and there was no way back. We got a consolation through Challinor but we were well beaten by a lively Peterborough side. We walked back to Stu’s car baffled by a terrible performance but hopeful that it was just a one-off. We made our way to the A1 and onto the A57, M1, M62 and M66 and got home about 8.30.
